Programs

Urban Underground believes that every young person should have the opportunity to discover and pursue the best in themselves for the improvement of the world around them.

What We Do
Urban Underground recruits and supports young people throughout the city to make a difference in themselves and the world around them.

How We Do It
Urban Underground is not a spectator sport. Every member is expected and supported to actively learn and work toward using their skills, ideas, and talents to improve their schools and communities. Members engage in various forms of youth activism including service, education, advocacy, organizing, and civic participation.

Leadership and Life Skills Workshops
Leaders are taught not born. Members who join Urban Underground lead and participate in weekly life-skills and leadership workshops. These fun and informative sessions build awareness and skills that young people need to do their best in school and beyond.

Community Engagement
Urban Underground is not a spectator sport. Every member is expected and supported to actively work toward using their skills, ideas, and talents to improve their schools and communities. Members learn to participate in various forms of youth activism including service, education, advocacy, organizing, and civic participation.

Experiential Activities
Urban Underground provides fun opportunities for youth to develop skills and explore the world beyond their neighborhood. These experiences include field trips, college visits, company tours, national conferences, community events, and special projects.

Goal Setting
Every member is expected and supported to identify real and attainable goals in the areas of learning, leadership, and life.

Learning goals are specific to building knowledge or skills in and outside of school. Examples include: improving grades in a specific subject, applying for scholarships, reducing incident referrals, applying to college, reading a book, etc.

Leadership goals are specific to the development and application of leadership skills. Examples include public speaking, self and community advocacy, organizing an event, volunteering, etc.

Life goals are personal areas of growth and development. Examples have included: anger management, improving family relationships, refraining from alcohol or tobacco use, etc.

Life Coaching/Mentoring
Each member receives guidance and support from an Urban Underground advisor related to their individual goals. Professional staff is consistently available to provide support to every member of Urban Underground and their parents.

What youth can expect from Urban Underground
Youth that want to join Urban Underground should expect to be treated with respect and supported to do their best. Urban Underground is an organization developed and run in partnership with the young people it was created to engage.

Many organizations claim to support true youth leadership. We were built on it. For this reason every member should expect to be challenged, encouraged, and supported to think, live, and lead by example.

If you are a young person tired of living in violent neighborhoods, and attending failing schools Urban Underground is a place for you to share your ideas, build your knowledge and skills, and work on making the difference you want to see in the world.

Members must be able to commit to at least one year of active involvement in Urban Underground. Members that successfully participate can remain involved each year that they are in high school.
