For the first time in Urban Underground’s 11 year history young men comprise the majority of the class. This can be directly attributed to several of the learning opportunities made possible through the campaign’s efforts. For example, cultural tailoring and rites of passage techniques learned from the Brother, Sister Leader training funded through OSF CBMA were valuable to our outreach and recruitment of young men. Although Urban Underground has consistently achieved long-term success with its work with young men, getting them in the door to apply was always the initial challenge. We are finally overcoming that challenge. Although Urban Underground will continue to provide a safe and supportive co-ed space for young people ages 14-18 we have also strengthened our commitment and capacity to establishing powerful gender-specific programming for young men and young women.
